So What Is Nolan Doing These Days?

I wanted to try and catch up and relate what Nolan is up to lately.  It’s so hard to write much these days- I write things in my head as I take care of Nolan but then when I get to the computer I only seem to have time and brain enough to post a few pictures and the writings are lost.  Which are important.  Like the fact that Nolan as of about a week and a half ago started making a long “m” sound.  He kind of sucks his lower lip in and goes “mmmmmmmmmmm…..” a lot.  It’s his new sound.  He’s also a big smiler- that began just about as soon as he gave his first smile.  It’s a grin that really comes readily, to almost any person new or familiar, and as long as he’s not grumpy for some reason.  He is learning to sit up- he can do it with assistance, although he doesn’t find as much pride in it as he does in trying to stand.  That kid is so strong!  We hold him up with his feet on the ground and he can really basically hold up himself with his own muscles- it’s just the upper body strength and balance he needs still.  You can tell he feels really proud of himself when he “stands” because he gives you this big grin like “look at me!! I’m STANDING.  I’m a grown up.”  It’s very cute, but also a teensy bit worrisome at the same time because of everything I’ve read on the importance of crawling first.  So we do spend a little time helping him to be on his tummy and propping him up to gear his interest to the upcoming world of crawling.  I’ve noticed that just the last couple of days that he is starting to reach out his arms towards me and talk very urgently while looking me straight in the eye when he wants to be picked up from his lounger chair.

He loves to look up.  In his room, on the diaper changing table he gets very excited at what he sees when he looks at the ceiling.  I don’t know what is because I look up and all I see is a plain, cream colored ceiling.  Maybe it’s the distance- either way he gets so excited.  He smiles, and his legs started kicking, and he even gasps with delight in a higher pitched sound than he normally makes.  It’s really quite funny.  Outside I’ve started putting on a blanket under the maple tree so he can look at the wind blowing the maple leaves on the branches- boy that really gets him going.  He spends quite awhile kicking his legs, smiling, and talking excitedly while he watches the  maple tree.  That’s now part of our daily routine.

As far as sleeping goes….well…wish I had some more proud, beaming words to share with you in that area but after a mommy frequently has to awaken every 1-2 hours all night long for most nights, it’s hard to get too excited about his sleep schedule.  Oh well.  It’s only a matter of time right?  On the bright side, it can only get better from here on out.  Even if that takes awhile.  Additionally- if I can feel as generally good as I do on such a sleep schedule, I figure I’m all set up to be wonder woman when I get my first night of full and complete rest.
