Nolan and I had our first hike together in at least a few months recently.  We had a great time- he actually did a little of the hiking himself, and after a climb up 2 switchbacks at different intervals, he was pretty pooped and fell asleep almost instantly on my back for the rest of the hike. I can tell you- he is HEAVIER than when we last went.  And even though I’m now 27 lbs lighter than our last hike, it still felt HEAVIER.  And it certainly couldn’t be even partially due to my being out of shape could it???  It has to be all Nolan’s fault.

A New Addition to the Family

Did I get you excited or fearful?  Well, it’s not what you’re hoping or fearful of I can tell you that!  Behold, our “new” piano!  Something for Nolan to bang on, and for Ben to play where I can enjoy listening to it.  I used to love when my mom played piano at night- I’d be in bed just listening to the lovely sounds of the piano with stuff like Chopin and Moonriver and….well, I don’t really know much about piano music but you get the picture.  Except now I am listening to the lovely sounds while I blog.  How times change.  I am now blogging when I used to be lying in bed ready to sleep.  And as a matter of fact it is indeed 11:39 pm right now.We got the piano in trade from one of Ben’s gardening clients in exchange for Ben’s labor- so basically free right?  He is installing a lawn for this client so part of the money he would have made will go to paying off the piano- this means that Ben only had to sell a small percentage of his back health for this piano.  Haha. The piano came into my house dark and foreboding and depressing.  I’m a very strange person in some ways.  Well maybe many ways, but this particular strange thing about me is that sometimes I get a feeling about a space or an object and it looks really depressing and empty to me- I hate that feeling and I can’t always explain why it feels that way to me, but anyway, this piano was old and very very dark- it made my living room feel empty and dark to me.  Obviously that has changed as you saw above!  I have coated it in 3 coats of primer, and 3 coats of off-white semi-gloss paint.  Later a decorative glaze will likely follow- either in teal, purple, or orangey tones, but I’m undecided on that at the moment so for now it will sit in it’s soft light beauty as it is.  Here’s a video below of the event and Nolan “playing” and singing.

A banging wall idea!

I came across this and had to post it, more as a way to remember it myself and something I might like to make Nolan at some point- it seems so fun.
