In IndoNESian

Nolan has been getting some exposure to the Indonesian language from his Bibi (Aunty in Indonesian- Elyse) and Zac-Zac (ummm…child’s english). I am so amazed how quickly he picks up on it and how he inherently knows that the words he learns are not english. He has a stuffed dog he calls Anjiing which is Dog in Indonesian- and all the time he says, “Anjiing…inIndoNEsian” – just like that with the emphasis as I typed it.
He’s just over two years old and i asked him the other night as we were talking about Anjiing (indo for Dog) if he knew any other indonesian words- he then proceeded to say the ones he knew- apa kabar (sometimes out of his mouth sounds like “apat kaban”,
baik, and a couple others he knew but I’m not familiar with. I was like wow!! How does he know the difference? But he does- whenever Ben talks silly in words that aren’t real words, Nolan laughs and says “that’s funny” because he knows it’s not our language.
Then just last night he was recalling a visit to a friends house a few days before who had farm animals that we got to look at it. As we were laying in his bed in the dark, winding down for bed he said, “apa kabar chickens….apa kabar goats…” He was asleep several minutes later. By the way, apa kabar means “how are you?”, or something to that affect.
